About Us...

In Hawaii in 1965, Mr. Raymond Takiguchi took his children on the weekends hiking in the Koolau Mountains on Oahu and gathered fallen kukui nuts - also known as candle nuts. Evenings and spare time was spent by all cleaning, polishing and drilling the nuts which were then sewn into leis. These leis were sold to souvenir shops in Waikiki and other isle tourist spots. By 1968 the company was incorporated as Ala Makana Inc., Wholesale Manufacturers and Distributors. Souvenirs were becoming very popular with the growing tourism and soon windchimes, puka shells, collector shells and shell leis from the Philippines were added to the line. In 1989 handmade BATIK sarongs from Indonesia were introduced to the tourist retailers and became a hit and remains one of our best sellers in the market today. The early nineties expanded the sarong business to BATIK sundresses and aloha shirts. Soon after, a complete resort collection of PINEAPPLE MOON 100% washable silk ladies and mens apparel was launched with great success. Today, Pineapple Moon has evolved to a Resort Apparel Collection with distributions centers in Honolulu and Las Vegas. We still service many of our loyal Hawaii customers from the 60's but expanded distribution to the continental US in 2001. We have customers globally including Japan, Samoa, Guam, Canada, Caribbean and South America. Our specialized sales team also services our Military Exchanges and Cruise Lines.
